Abstract

This article is the result of a historical-cultural analysis of the ways of approaching the disease and its confrontation in the Amazon, from the great national press between the 1960s and 1980s, it seeks to participate in the discussions about the many images by which these vehicles come constructing representations on the Amazon from the temporal cut-off. Its central focus is the issue of epidemics that have transposed social, historical and cultural aspects of the region in general and about Rondônia in a specific way. The social impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Brazil was characterized in the Amazon by the "spontaneous" and / or encouraged progress of government, at the expense of human and environmental exploration. Three major Brazilian press vehicles were investigated: "Folha de São Paulo" and "O Globo" newspapers, as well as "Veja" magazine, which have undergone serial analysis and content, with statistical analysis and qualitative weights. The theoretical framework in which this research is inscribed is that of cultural studies and Cultural History, and it is of particular importance to construct the image of the unhealthy place on the Amazon that rivaled the representation of the Land of Providence present in the same periodical pages.
