Libras learning process for a hearing impaired child a case study

Abstract

Libras is the Brazilian Sign Language developed and used by deaf communities. This language has as a communication channel, movements and expressions that are perceived by vision. Thus, in this article, we aimed to analyze the process of appropriation of Libras by a child with hearing loss, observing their learning capacity and the extent to which this learning will favor their social and personal development. Theoretically, we started from a bibliographic research, in theorists like: Castro; Carvalho (2005), Goldfeld (1997), Oliveira (2002), Quadros (1997), Silva (2001), among others. Also, field research, when we carry out a case study, by monitoring the teaching and learning process of Libras by a deaf student, taking into account all aspects that involved the subject's life. The results obtained demonstrate that the child has a good intellectual development and ease of assimilation and understanding of Libras. Through this work, we realized the importance of teaching Libras in schools as a first language for the deaf, confirming that the sooner children have access to this learning, the better their development will be.
